Cebu
island is a province in the center of the Philippine archipelago,
some 600 kilometers south of Manila, the country's capital.
It has a total land area of 5,088.4 square kilometers or
508,839 hectares. With 47 towns/municipalities and 6 cities,
namely: Mandaue City, Lapulapu City, Danao City, Toledo
City, Talisay City, and Cebu City - its capital (see
map).Cebu is considered the second largest
urban center in the country.
There are 45 tertiary learning institutions including 6
universities, hence, more than 90% of its 3 million people
are literate. The labor force of about 1.5 million is oriented
towards non-agricultural lines. Cebuano, the local dialect
is spoken by 98% of its people while Tagalog, English and
Chinese (Fookien and Mandarin) are the languages commonly
used in schools, in government and in business.
Historically, Cebu City is the first Spanish settlement
in the country. Through the years, it has remained as the
“Queen City of the South” for its excellent
economic track record. Still the fastest growing economy
in the Philippines, Cebu is also known as “The Philippines’
Bestseller.”
Cebu is the country’s top tourist and business destination
serving as the gateway to the Central and Southern Philippines.
It is close to natural wonders, exotic tourist spots with
more readily accessible domestic sea and air transport than
in Manila.
Manufacture and assemblage of semiconductors and other electronic
and industrial parts, furniture, food processing, handicraft
gifts, toys, house wares, garments and fashion accessories
contribute to about 7% of the country’s total export
with USA and Japan as its largest markets. The availability
of communication and other market infrastructures including
internet service providers, cable TVs, sufficient IDD telephone
access, mobile phone services, media outlets, and commercial
banks sustain business competitiveness.
More laid-back compared to Manila, Cebu basically has a
cosmopolitan attitude with the increasing number of fine
dining and exotic restaurants, entertainment and health
clubs operating day and night. A number of five-star hotels
are also within a 10-minute distance or less from the City
center.
Health services with state of the art equipment and medical
experts trained abroad are always on call in Cebu City’s
world-class hospitals.
Cebu is also famous for its amazingly pristine beaches and
sea-wonders found in Mactan Island, Malapascua Island, Olango
Island, Bantayan Islands, Sumilon Island, Camotes Island
and Badian Island.
